About Jharna

My first experience of homebirth was while attending a woman in Calcutta, India in the early 1980's. I was struck by the sense of community and the inability to tell was the midwife, and who were the family members and supportive women of the "neighborhood".  At that time, Copenhagen Denmark was my home base and while there, I was priviledged to  experience a culture where the majority of the births were attended by midwives.  My interest and belief strengthened. I returned to the United States in early 1988.

I began my formal midwifery training in 1989 with direct entry midwife Elizabeth Mazanec at her school in New Hampshire. Realizing that I wanted to go further in my training I traveled to El Paso Texas where I trained at Maternidad La Luz with the very talented Deb Kaley (director) and a multitude of other talented mentors.  After returning back to Massachusetts a year later, I practiced independently until joining River Valley Midwives in 1993. I have been blessed to work in partnership over these 25 yrs with midwives Penfield Chester, Terri Nash, CPM, Kristen Bernard RN, DEM and Kirsten Lane CNM.

In 1999, I completed my schooling and became a registered nurse. I specialize in psychiatric nursing and work as an RN at the Brattleboro Retreat, a private non-profit psychiatric hospital. I have a background in massage, herbalism and homeopathy.

I make my home in Montague MA with my husband Bush I,  son Mosiayah and daughter Veda Ruth (both born at home).
