About Kara

Kara came to midwifery and home birth by way of Zimbabwean folk music and a woman-run, non-profit organization based in Berkeley, CA-- it's a long, serendipitous story! She has been attending births in Massachusetts since 2010, and began her midwifery training in 2012. Over the course of 3+ years, she learned the art and craft of midwifery through traditional apprenticeship, training with 3 midwives in 2 busy home birth practices. She also shadowed a nurse-midwife in a gynecology practice, and a nurse practitioner in a full spectrum women's health clinic. To compliment her hands-on experience, she completed a three-year nationally accredited midwifery program at Birthwise Midwifery School. Kara earned the credential "Certified Professional Midwife" in 2016 and launched Modern Mama Midwifery, a home birth midwifery partnership with Emily Bowler, CPM. As a midwife, Kara believes in:

  • the inherent power of women’s bodies
  • safeguarding a woman’s birth experience as a natural, physiologic event
  • evidence-based care and the judicious use of technology and medical intervention
  • deconstructing the perception of pregnancy as a pathological condition; demedicalizing the birth experience
  • validating home birth as a safe option for low-risk women; breaking down barriers to out-of-hospital midwifery care
  • empowering women and families to make choices in pregnancy, labor, and birth that give their babies the best start possible
  • providing support and care that honors the holistic nature of the childbearing year
